Have a hand in helping the habitat of the blue penguins staying clean and healthy!
Located at the tip of the Otago Peninsula, Takiharuru (Pilots' Beach) is a reserve where the little blue penguins arrive home each evening.
Litter is a major problem for our coastlines and Takiharuru is not exempt from this problem. Join a Litter Intelligence programme and conduct a beach clean and a survey of the collected litter types to learn its varying impacts to the environment. Interpretation of results and will follow inside the Royal Albatross Centre.
Don't forget to bring appropriate footwear for exploring the beach reserve (gumboots will be very useful!). Dress for cold / wet and possibly windy weather and bring gloves for gathering and sorting of the rubbish.
Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
All participants of the programme during the day will be eligible for a Blue Penguin Pukekura tour free of charge in the evening.
