The intense consumption and rapid disposal of plastic products is leading to the widespread accumulation of plastic debris in marine ecosystems. Coastal ecosystems are especially vulnerable to plastic pollution owing to their proximity to terrestrial sources of plastic pollution, but also due to oceanic currents and wind patterns depositing plastic debris on coastlines.
