Learn about aurora australis/Tahu-nui-ā-Rangi while you seek out aurora-inspired artworks in the Dunedin Botanic Garden!
Take part in an aurora-inspired scavenger hunt at the Dunedin Botanic Garden! Learn about the science and pūrākau of aurora australis/Te Tahu-nui-ā-Rangi as you seek out artworks made by local tamariki.
Clay tiles showing local tamariki's interpretations of the aurora will be hidden around the gardens. Collect or download a scavenger hunt brochure which has information about the science and pūrākau of the aurora as well as a treasure map for your search.
During the Puaka Matariki season, we look to the sky and this year in particular you may just see an aurora glowing back at you! That’s because the solar maximum is happening this June/July. The solar maximum is the peak of an 11-year cycle of activity on the surface of the sun which can lead to more frequent auroral activity in our skies. There are many pūrākau and names for Te Tahu-nui-a-rangi, including that the flickering colours in the night sky come from the campfires of ancestors. Join in the scavenger hunt to learn more!
Do this activity at your own pace during the Botanic Garden's visitor centre hours (10am - 4pm daily). Scavenger hut maps will be available at the visitor centre.
Please note: This is a self directed activity and is mostly outdoors. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Remember to be safe at the Gardens and keep to the paths and trails. And don't forget to leave the tiles in place for others to find. Happy hunting!
This event was made possible thanks to funding from the Puaka Matariki Festival (14 June - 12 July) and Creative New Zealand's Creative Communities scheme, both administered by the Dunedin City Council.
