Carnival of the Animals
Tweens | Teens | Adults

This hands-on workshop invites participants to make soft toy animals and reflect on which lives we protect or overlook in conservation.

Part of the ArtScience Exhibition, this work responds to the Living Planet Index artworks. The hands-on workshops invite participants to create hand-sewn soft toys—giraffes, lions, and elephants—using jacquard tapestry cloth and locally sourced sheep fleece for stuffing. While these familiar, charismatic animals inspire the making process, the workshop also shines a light on the often-overlooked majority of life on Earth: insects and other invertebrates.

Insects make up the vast bulk of animal diversity and play essential roles in maintaining healthy ecosystems, yet they receive far less attention and protection than larger, more 'relatable' species. In Aotearoa New Zealand alone, tens of thousands of insect species contribute quietly but critically to environmental balance.

Through craft and conversation, this workshop encourages participants to reflect on how we value different forms of life. By stitching beloved animal forms while learning about the ecological importance of insects, attendees will explore the tension between visibility, care, and conservation in the natural world.
