Join us for a unique citizen science experience, and uncover the hidden story of Dunedin’s air quality.

Have you ever wondered if the air is cleaner in parks compared to busy roads? We’re finding out!

Join us for the Magnetic Leaves Bioblitz, a unique citizen science experience where you’ll play a vital role in a real scientific investigation.

What is a BioBlitz? Think of it as a nature treasure hunt! We’ll be exploring the Woodhaugh Gardens and surrounding area, working together to find and identify as many plant species as possible. But this isn’t just about spotting pretty plants – we’re on a mission to uncover the hidden story of Dunedin’s air quality.

Plant leaves collect magnetic airborne particles, most of which are sourced from vehicle pollution. By measuring the magnetic properties of these leaves, we can assess air pollution levels in different settings – and we need your help to do it! During this hands-on experience, you will learn the basics of biomagnetic monitoring, explore the plant life in the Woodhaugh Gardens, help collect leaf samples for analysis, and contribute to cutting-edge research.

This is a family-friendly event! Whether you’re an adult, teenager, or family with young children (preschool and primary school kids welcome with caregiver supervision), you can be part of this exciting project.

Important Information: We encourage attendees to download the 'Aotearoa Species Classifier' app to their device before the event. We will be using this app to identify plant species for the Bioblitz, particularly natives. Children are welcome with caregiver supervision.
